Build your own ultra-simple electric motor with only a battery, magnet, and a bit of wire. Takes only a minute to build, but will keep you mesmerized for hours. Makes a hypnotizing spiral screw movement. Featured in Make: volume 1. Cool science project. Impress your friends. Makes a cool conversation piece for the cubicle.

The Reason Why it works in the first place is because of a thing called The Potential Difference. It's nothing but Electrons. Science RULZ !!! ~ Ace

Electric Explaination: As electrons leave the negative end of the battery and pass onto the copper wire, they impose a negative charge. The now negatively charged wire is repelled by the magnet. The kinetic energy of the repulsion is curbed by the bend in the wire. Causing it to corkscrew.

Kinetic Explination (unlikely): As the electrons leave the negative end of the battery, their trajectory is deflected by the magnet. These electrons meet the resistance of the wire at an angle. The energy of this impact is again deflected (curbed) by the spiral shape of the wire. Causing it to corkscrew.
