Deborah Kerr plays English widow Anna Leonowens, who comes to Siam in the 1860s to tutor the many wives and children of the country's King (Yul Brynner, recreating his Broadway role and winning an Oscar in the process). The culture clash between Anna and the King is but one aspect of the multilayered relationship. I have an issue with Rita Moreno playing in this movie, Dorothy Dandrege deserved that role

To yarwood1935, Lesley Garret would not stand up to Hollywood or Broadways elite. She has an annoying nasal quality and has a very obnoxious personality, maybe thats why you like her so much. To say this film is dated is a compliment in my eyes. Hollywood just couldnt recreate this spectacle today

To all Thai people offended by Yul Brynner's perfomance as King Mongkut. Nobody seriously believes its an accurate portrayal of your venerated King. Just as people dont believe that Patrick McGoohan's performance as Edward I in Braveheart is truthfull. Its just a movie. What a shame its still banned in Thailand as this is one hell of musical spectacle.

Excuse me, but that does not look or sound like King Mongkut's voice, nor does it look like him.
